Connect White Wire (Neutral) to the GFCI.

The GFCI measures the current flowing to the circuit on the black wire and compares it to the current on the White wire. If they don't compare, the GFCI opens the HOT wire. It assumes that the missing current is going to earth ground through "YOU" or some other path. Theoretically it cuts off the current before you can get shocked to death.
