David, Thanks for the advice. I will try. I'm not sure if I know how to unhook the electric wires from the units, but I will be sure to use the circuit breaker to cut the power first! One problem is that the detector in the bedroom is on a vaulted ceiling that I can't begin to reach even with a step ladder. I'm going to have to find someone VERY tall to help me with this. Why would the previous owner put detectors on a vaulted ceiling? Thanks again. Janet
