Hi Janet, sounds like you might want to call the non-emergency number at your local fire dept and ask their advice first or the manufacturer. It does sounds like the battery backup is near the end of its life. You could call an electrician to remove the wires and then change the battery if it goes that far. My guess as to why they would put them on the vaulted ceiling is because it is the highest place in the house???
