Female PVC fittings can only be used with plastic male fittings, 2003 Uniform Plumbing Code 606.2.2. The softer material should always be male going into the harder material which is female.
You should cut off the male copper adapter and solder on a female adapter. Or you can install a brass coupling. Your PVC male adapter will then screw into the copper/brass female threads. Try to get the plastic adapter that has brass threads molded on it. Then obtain a PVC slip coupling (lawn sprinkler company) and add a short piece of pvc and slip the coupling back and onto the other pipe.
To make the PVC connection using Primer (not cleaner) and while the primer is still wet add the cement. You should let the plastic joint set for two to 24 hours as reccommended by the type of cement you use.
The main problem with this repair is too small of a hole to work in.
