Murray Riding Mower/Trans

I have a 36" Murray Riding Mower. I have been ill for sometime, and went through the steps to restart the motor. It runs fine, except, when I place it into gear (1-5) it doesn't move. I turned it off, placed it into gear and you cane hear it's in gear.
Is it possible the clutch plates or cable are not working correctly, or is the tarns belt driven, where the belt may be stretched?
