You can get a manual from Sears if it is not too old.
First, disconnect the GDO and see if the door opens/closes normally by hand. If not, it must be balanced, and that depends upon the type of door. While you are messing with the door, lube pivot points.
If balanced, the usual fix is to adjust the up/down force. If it is a chain drive - particularly an older one - that may be hard to do.
If you just cannot get it to work, replace it with a Genie screw drive. They are reliable and you can get one at a home center for about $155. Newer GDOs will have the lower door sensors, so expect to spend as much as five hours installing it. Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
