Removing a chimney stack in the basement

I want to remove the chimney stack that vents the hot water tank, but only the basement section... and leave the chimney stack that runs through the first floor and up through the attic. the chimney is approx 16 inchs by 16 inchs. I want to know what would be the best way to support the chimney from the basmt.
