You've probably nicked the red wire someplace allowing it to short to ground....maybe at or around the cable clamp/end of the sheath.....at the switch/out or the ceilingfan/in...........
You might disconnect the wires and try an ohms reading.....Red to ground.......to check for continuity (a bad thing here)
