with your fan and light connected together that makes them both turn on, What happens when you turn on the light switch? If the breaker still pops, then as Doug suggested, you have shorted the red lead. Most likely its the clamp that clamps the cable at a junction box where it leaves the box on the way to the light wire, red wire to blue wire.
loosen the clamp and jiggle the wire. With the switch in the off position and the red lead to blue lead at the fan disconnected, measure the resistance between the Light Switch red wire and Neutral, then to copper ground wire. In either case the reading on your ohm meter should be infinite resistance. ALSO! The friggin switch could be shorted to ground internally!! Check it out. Adios... Jasper
