i was looking for answers here too to improve homemade tv reception. the biggest factor is your proximity to the transmitting station. 2nd, due to the fact that the tv signals travel in straight lines, physical barriers, trees, mountains, etc, will attenuate (weaken) the signal. rooftop antennas are often longer than 15 foot in lgth and mostly comprised of light wieght aluminum tubing. 90% of the mass is dedicated to receiving cnls 2-13. vhf. with the proper leadin wire, a relatively small uhf antenna can be made capable of recving stations 14-100. rooftop experimenters, beware of power lines and take proper lightning precautions.
