Defective Tester

The reversal of the wires should have reversed the symptoms. As Doug suggested, Get a two wire neon tester. Put one lead on the ground hole and the other to either hole in the recepticle. One should make the neon tester glow and the other not. The one that glows is the hot hole. The wire on that side of the recepticle should be a black wire connected to the "brass colored Screw", The Neutral wire goes to the "silver" screw. This is assuming that the copper wire ground wire is connected from that recepticle back to the power panel. If the ground wire is not making a connection, the neon light will not light on either hole.
