Clogged Dryer Vent

We recently purchased a tri-level home with a main floor laundry. At the walk through before the closing we noticed the dryer vent was disconnected and so the vent was vented into the room in the house. (I figured it must have just came loose) NOT!!! We tried hooking it back up and the dryer would NOT dry the clothes. Hardly any air was venting to the outside. We even bought a brand new dryer since we thought it was 25 yrs old that it may be the dryer. Wrong. Still a problem with a new dryer.
It was a large nest inside the dryer vent. We bought a 10ft dryer vent cleaning brush for about $20. You can find these on the internet or an appliance parts store. It was severly clogged so this would not work on its own. We first used a plumbers snake to make a hole through the nest,( a garden hose may work also) then ran a tape measure with a nylon string attached. Then we had to PULL the dryer vent cleaning brush through to unclog the dryer. This whole figuring out and acutal doing the work took over three hours.
I had called a vent cleaning service and they wanted $125 to clean the dryer vent. That would have done the job also.
I read posts from this web site and also tried the leave blower from the inside of the dryer vent but this did NOT work for us.
I had horrors of having to re-route the dryer vent which would have involved tearing out walls and ceilings fortunately we did this first.
I felt like sending the pervious owners the remains of the birds nest and thanking them for being so "dishonest". This problem was concealed when we looked at the house and it was not until the day of the closing we seen it.
I saw many questions about this problem. Some had suggestions but none worked for us. One suggestion was to re-route the dryer vent which would be extremely costly and messy. This is fixable but takes some time.
I hope this helps. The vent run to the outside of our house is about 12 feet. GOOD LUCK.
