Sheald Posted by homebild on October 28th, 2004 05:39 PM In reply to Using lead sheeting for sound-insulation questions... by Brad44 on October 28th, 2004 11:03 AM [Go to top of thread]
It's an interesting concept and you can read more about Sheald here:
http://www.canadametal.com/products/sheald.htm
Especially since the company claims that 1 1/64" thick laminate of its product has the same sound resistant qualities of a 6" thick concrete wall.
My first objection to the product is that it would not provide the minimum 1 hour fire rated performance that most drywall will and that lead will melt at relatively low temperatures in a fire...but since all it would do is expose the drywall beneath am not sure that is a real problem...especially if you cover it with perhaps a 1/4" sheet of drywall...but I don't think it would even be necessary
My second objection is that the product has no endorsement for residential use....and may be considered an environmental hazard and therefore unuseable for home applications. Only by presenting the product to your local code office can you know for sure.
The 3rd objection is its permanence. The company says that Sheald can be fastened with staples and as long as it is temporarily attached and easily removable, may pose no problems. I would avoid trying to 'glue' or 'adhere' it to make for an easy removal later.
Last objection is health. Lead is a toxic metal. Lead causes neurological problems and even death if absorbed by the body in sufficient quantities. It is no longer acceptable to use leaded paint or even leaded solder in pipes let alone having lead exposed on habitable space walls. Again, don't know how this would affect the health of you or other occupants and the issue would have to be addressed by your local, state and even Federal code regulations.
But all these objections aside, it "appears" they can be overcome and might gain the approval of code, safety and health agencies if handled properly.
Depending on cost, however, it may be cheaper to build, frame and drywall a new staggered partition than to use a product like Sheald.
Please do write back and let usknow what your code officials ultimately state about the product.
Best of Luck.
