Abnormal garage door opener problem

We have had our Genie/Overhead Door opener for years, without problems, until last week. The door stops at random positions, up to 4 times when opening or closing. It does not reverse it's travel, just stops, and it's light goes out at the same time. Upon activating, it starts immediately, but stops again within a foot or two. It seems like all power to the unit just stops ? It reacts the same with both remotes and the inside control as well. I have checked all wiring and connections and all seem tight. The motor sounds fine, and the gears are like new. I have disconnected the opener and manually operated the door, and there is no resistance at any point in the travel. I'm wondering if the transformer or capacitor might cause this ? Suggestions gratefully invited. Thanks.
