I have a soffit that contains a glue-lam beam that spans about 11 feet between support posts and is about 2 feet from a bearing wall. It looks like the only reason that the glue-lam was used because it provides support where the ceiling joists meet, otherwise if a continous joist was used between the bearing walls, the span would not have been a problem. I would really like to remove the glue-lam and was wondering if it was possible to sister the joists together by glueing and nailing a piece of OSB on one or both sides?
