Neighborhood associations are a bear, I don't envy your situation. Make sure that if you are going with an alternative product that you get it approved first. One good way to do it is to present it at a neighborhood meeting and gain the support of some or more of your neighbors.
Unfortunately, this is not a situation of do it and apologize later. Apologies with associations usually take the form of fines (that can turn into leins on your home) and tearing your roof off and doing it AGAIN with an approved product.
