first thing I would do is replace the filter element. get a filter attached air freshener and run the fan continuously for a few days. replace the filter and air freshener and repeat. I have used this in a rental house that was occupied by a chain smoker to get rid of the smoke smell. it took about 2 weeks to get rid of the smoker smell.
