I had similar thing happen a couple of years ago in mid-winter (about 10 below). In my case I had some "fine white plastic dust" falling from the gdo. The motor hummed, the gear was turning, but the teeth were gone or a least not meshing. Had to get a new nylon gear (about $25CDN). This was a Sears model. That solved the problem.
