hardwood staricase

just recently had my staircase sanded and stained by a proffesional who said the it would look good. Unfortunatley after the job, I am not impressed with the work. The contractor said it was due to the cheap wood, however when he quoted me the price he did not mention anything about the wood.? What is a solution to make the risers look better ?Thanks.
