Whole House Water Filter

Could anyone tell me if it's possible to install a "whole house" water filter BEFORE the pump?

I live in the country and have my own hand dug well. We get a lot of sediment ie: sand and very small gravel. A few years ago, I purchased a new water filter but couldn't make it work ahead of the water pump. I did however, get it working after the pump and pressure tank, but the sediment is getting into my pumps impeller and into my bladder type pressure tank. Is there any way to hook the filter before the pump and tank? Why won't it work hooked ahead of them? This make NO sense to me. Does anyone have any ideas as to a solution?
