the problem is it permiates into foam and headliner, as well as heating vents, even film on windows.
A good shampooing does the trick but the mistake is made not leaving windows open a pinch to allow all the moisture out of the car, and as it dries put a strong air freshner in your car it will obsorb as the moisture wicks away. Febreez works, just spray it in your vents while and try to find where the fresh air intake is and feed it in there too, or steam it with a kettle and ucalyptus, the steam permiates better, but tones of elbow grease and wipe down all the plastics, traces of nicotine residue REEKS! even if you clean an ashtray with degreaser it permiates into the plastic but long term cleaning with overpowering fragrance in car will win the smell battle...
