craftsman 1/2 hp GDO new installation

I have a similar issue as others listed but do not see a solution short of paying Sears $90 to come correct it. After installing it only travels about 6-12 inches and returns to the same spot. They suggest that the limit control is out of range due to pluging unit into power before installing the safety control. HUMmmm BAD install issue. They would not advise how to correct.
