Plugged Disposal?......

It sounds like the disposal is plugged/jammed or is malfunctioning. If it is plugged, and the dishwasher is draining (attempting to drain) into it, that is the reason the dishwasher is backing up.
The disposal instructions should have a small wrench with them. It is an allen type wrench and fits into the bottom of the disposal. WITH THE DIS[POSAL OFF, insert the wrench into the bottom and turn it back and forth until the disposal frees up. Once it frees up, it should run on its own when you turn it on. DO NOT TURN IT ON WITH THE WRENCH STILL IN IT!
