Old Creaky Stairs

Just bought a 1930's duplex. Going to rehab the entry to the 2nd floor unit (where I live). The stairs are a little creaky. There is no access from the underside. They currently have sheet vinyl on the treads, which I am going to replace, so I can do whatever from the top. Are strategically placed screws my answer? Was this post helpful? Yes: or No:
