is this a cathedral ceiling with pine boards(finished ceiling)on top of the rafters.
then a vapor barrier is put on top of these baords. and then 4 inches of ridged styrofoam. and then 1" by 4" strapping(the 1 by 4 goes from the bottom to the top ,leaving an air channel to the ridge).and then five eights plywood . and then roofing felt . and shingles.
or
if the pine is on the bottom of the 2 by 10 rafters and the insulation and venting is correct then. there could be no vapor barrier behind the pine allowing warm air to go into the small attic/air space. and you should have at least r40 in that ceiling to help prevent warm air from melting the snow pack.
.....but another problem can be that your ridge vent is getting covered with snow(low profile vent or ridge vent) and then it stops working causing ice dams.try a turbine roof vent or a high profile snow roof vent.
