thanks for the info unregistered-dave. i thought that that probably was the problem - no vapor barrier and insulation r value isn't high enough. i did put a high profile ridge vent on, but that alone did not help. i have the second type of ceiling you suggested- pine on the bottom of 2 x 10 rafters. thanks again for the info.
