sand for showerpan weep holes?

I recently had a contractor build a showerpan floor for me, but I am now doubting some of the work. He tells me that he used sand around the drain weep holes before applying the mud. Everything I am now reading mentions the use of gravel or stone. Will the sand be a problem for me? If so, should I digout the entire mud layer and redo, or can I just dig out the area around the drain, replace with sand and then refloat just that area with mud?
