Garage Door Opener Done Broke

I have a Craftsman 1/2 HP opener on my garage door (single door for two car garage). This morning it opened about 2/3 then stopped. The motor kept going, but the door stopped. I took off the cover, and the two plastic cogs (from motor to chain sprocket) are stripped - there are shavings everywhere...

I have two questions:

Is there a rebuild kit or replacement parts available for Craftsman openers?

Why might this have happened? The door does not seem to bind. It's heavy, but it opens easily enough by hand. Are there any common causes for this type problem?
