staining ceramic tile

I've heard this question asked several times, but I've never heard an answer. We have white ceramic tile in our kitchen and entry. We'd like to stain it, or paint it to look similar to stain. Will this work? How long will it last before it starts chipping or scraping? And what products would work best?
