Roof addition

Stumped! We (yup, hubby and me) are about to put an addition on the house. The question is how to tie in the new roof. The addition will 'fill in' the "L" shape that we now have on the house (the "L" would then become a square) do we have to take off both roofs? Could we/should we just settle for a flat roof?
