chirping smoke detector - no battery

Help! My smoke detector is chirping away (driving me nuts at night) and I cannot find any battery in it to replace. It is connected to the house wiring. I know there is *supposed* to be a backup battery somewhere but I can't find it. When I take the thing off the ceiling there are just wires, and there is no casing that I can open. Any ideas?
