non toxic way to remove tile glue from brick

is there any way to remove tile glue from my brick fireplace, without using toxic chemicals. I have 2 cats and would rather not subject them to chemicals to remove the glue that I am trying to remove from my fireplace that I am trying to restore. If not, what would you recommend that is least toxic if anything... I tried scraping and chiseling, but the brick is so porrous that the glue is inside the little cracks.... well, if you have any help let me know.. thanks .... dawn
