refinishing shower base with porcelain

i have a new house (2 mos old). there is a grayish ring appearing around the drain. this stain is coming from underneath somehow and is not on the top. the builder's plumber wants to come and put a coat of porcelain on it. this is not a porcelain base, but just a regular shower base. my friend had a chip in her tub repaired and she said that spot keeps lifting and the repairs don't work. should i just live with this stain or have the base refinished in porcelain? thank you.
