Freezing in basement?

I don't know anything about basements but I thought that an underground basement didn't have to worry about the cold? Unless of course the cold air is getting in from some other place? If freezing air comes into the basement from some sourse,it will freeze anything in the basement. Unless of course you live on the side of a hill and that basement wall is exposed. Just thought I'd ask... Adios... Jasper
