Wiring a light switch with a pilot light.

I am wiring a light switch that has a pilot light. The light glows when a light in another room is left on. Do I need a single pole or a 3 way switch. I have tried both and the problem is that the light in the "other" room stays on all the time. The switch in the "other" room does not turn the light on or off.
