Can be done; I have done it. But not easy.
My one daughter bought an antique bed in good condition. Those things vary in size and hardware. I made four rounded corner blocks to extend it to queen size. Wasn't easy! The end result gave her a bed that fits around a queen-size mattress set. The mattress set sets on its own metal frame inside the antique bed frame. Really works nice.
So you may not have the ability to make the four corner expander blocks, but if you ask around antique stores, you should be able to find a source for them. They will probably have to be custom fitted to some degree since there was no standard size or hardware in that day.
For now, get a metal bed frame and set the mattress set on it and prop the headboard and footboard against the mattress. With some ingenuity, you might be able to rig up some means to hold it all together. For example, fit the side frames to the footer and just prop the headboard against the wall.
