You should not drain a water softener into a septic system.

Introducing treated water residue into the septic tank and septic system can cause the natural bacterial breakdown of wastes to fail.

Regen is not the only time you could have water draining from a softener.

Having too much salt in the reserve tank can cause the tank to overflow and excess water to run out.

And regen is based upon use...
