The new international plumbing code allows side wall venting. In fact it only requires one vent in the whole house to go outside. The builders support this code published by the government inspectors because it reduces housing costs by requiring lesser standards. If it doesn't work then you go to a regular code standard.
Sewer doesn't smell good (I don't mind it)so think about getting the vent up above windows.
