Drain tiles in backyard

I have a yard that is almost equally split between rock, pavement, and yard. I have drainage problems that are now mostly focused in the yard. I have heard of drain tiles, but never installed them. I looked around the store today and have some questions. When I put these underground, do I have to lay them at a slope? Do I need a vertical drain leading to the horizontal pipe, or will the pipe laid 6-8 inches underground suffice? Will the water them just soak through the soil and rock over the pipe, then into the pipe? What about at the end of the pipe, does it have to lead to an open area to drain, or can it just end in an area that appears to be free of standing water?
