ceramic nuts are not necessary. the only reason for a wire nut to melt at that point is from a poor connection causing resistance thus a heat build up.. make sure the wires are clean. do not twist the wires together prior to putting on the wire nut. make sure end of wires are even and the nut tightens down to the point where you cant turn it anymore... if you can continue turning the wire nut you may have the wrong size wire nut for the size of the wire you are using..
