you have an electric source/wires in the box that can melt and short out.

if gel spills or such, fire can easily spread.

temperature at the top portion of the unit from the fire can be hotter than designed for. (heat rises and collects at the top).

paints on unit are for low temps.

I have seen another post where someone wanted to put wood into a gas unit for the 'wood smell'. definately not recommended.
