They should have the windows in the room being varnished open for ventilation while doing the varnishing. Then leave them open for the rest of the night. If they want to work in other rooms, they can close doors (if possible) or tape some visqueen plastic to keep the fumes out of the rest of the house. Varnishes vary, but they should be able to close the windows the next day and be walking on the floors within two.
