So I opened the wall and clamped. Opened part of the ceiling - pipes not clamped because they go through wooden joists 12" apart, via drilled hole - No place to clamp, so stuffed in where the pipes go thru hole, with pipe foam insulation. DID NOT HELP at all. Matter of fact, when we recreated the problem while the ceiling opening was still sut open, the banging could be heard exactly at the spots (as before) where the ceiling was cut open, but NO vibration or pipe(s) banging with studs, yet WE CAN HEAR THE PIPE BANGING.

I am working backwards, meaning, clamping from the basement, and going towards the bathroom, and have not reached the batroom yet - Could this be the noise generated close to the bathroom, and then resonating further down, to make believe that the sound is coming from elsewhere.
