Gas Furnace Fails In High Humidity Conditions

Posted by mnveil on March 23rd, 2005 09:18 AM

I have a Lennox package unit with gas heat from around ~1994. The furnace fails to light in high-humidity conditions from rain or fog. The chamber fan comes on and then a few seconds later the ignitor sparks, and that's all that happens. This will continue every mitute or so as long as I let it sit there.
In dry conditions, no matter how cold, the unit works more reliably. Occasionally, the unit will misfire repeatedly for a few minutes before gaining a continuous flame, but will work none the less. I noticed that if I partially obstruct the exhaust during misfiring I get a steady flame, let it warm up, then remove my hand and everything's fine.
What's the deal with failing in humid conditions?? Thanks.
