Raising the ceiling Posted by chriskiser on April 5th, 2005 02:28 PM
My house was built in 1914. It appears to be ballon framing with lath board and plaster. We have torn out the plaster to the ceiling of a bedroom upstairs revealing the rafters and roof joists. They are not pre-built trusses, but simply 2x4s which are side nailed into the rafters. I don't know if these are lending great support to the rafters or are just there for the lath board. Is it okay to reinforce the rafters higher up and remove the existing 2x4s to increase the height of the ceilingin order to give a more vaulted look and room for track lighting and a ceiling fan?
