The whole lot of people are wrong. Roofs are hot and that REDUCES the efficiency of the condenser. The reasons to put a condenser on a roof is to get it away from a patio, keep it safe in a rough neighborhood or keep it close to the evaporator - long runs reduce efficiency too. Noise may or may not be less. On the roof it is in contact with the house and vibrations WILL carry thru the framing to nearby rooms.
