We have a whistling shower head as well, but it's predictable. It's pretty convenient, actually, because when it whistles I know it's (past) time to replace my whole house pleated in-line filter for our water supply, which is after the pump. It seems (in our case) that lowered water pressure causes a whistling in the shower head that doesn't occur when the pressure is full. When the filter starts becoming obstructed, the pump-side pressure doesn't react as quickly as the shower-side pressure, so the pressure to supply the house lowers more than normal and - you got it - whistle. Look for pressure obstructions or change your filter if you have one! Good luck!
