Dormant water softener

I have a water softener system in my home that has been dormant for at least a year, maybe more. It appears the previous owner turned it off and flipped the bypass valves when the sink it discharged into began leaking. I would like softer water and have the following questions:

1. Is there a health threat to using it now that it has sat with essentially stagnant water in it for at least a year, probably more?

2. If there is no health threat, is there much/any chance the resin tank is still useable at this stage? From the model I am betting the entire unit is at least 15 years old.

I'd hate to buy a new one if this one is safe and still might work, but I am not willing to risk my family's drinking water to save a few bucks either.

Thanks for any advice!
Chris
