My water softener instructions have the option of running a cleaning cycle with chlorine bleach to disinfect the water path. If you have documentation for yours, it may have a similar process. If you don't have documentation, you may be able to download the manual from the manufacturer of the unit. I don't know about the life cycle of resin beds, sorry.
