You can bring the unit back by sanitizing the softener. You do that by adding say a cup of bleach to the water in the brine tank and then doing a manual regeneration. If there is no water in the bottom of the brine tank, then add 5 gallons. Rinse all the bleach off any parts with clean water.
To learn more about the softener, do a search for "water softeners" and look at pictures of the control valves to find one that looks like yours. Then find out the brand name and go to the manufacturer's web site and download a manual. Then we can continue this 'cuz you'll have more questions. lol
